The OPAL Forward Calorimeters

The forward calorimeters sit close to the beam direction on either side of the detector, as shown:

One of the main purposes of the forward calorimeters is the determination of the luminosity of the colliding beams, by measuring the rate of forward electron-positron "Bhabha" scattering events.

The main parts of the forward calorimetry are:

• The forward detector
• The silicon-tungsten luminosity monitor
